Incidence decreases, number of deaths increases

Wed 8th Sep, 2021

The German seven-day incidence of new Corona infections has again fallen slightly. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Wednesday morning, it was 82.7 - the previous day the value had been 83.8, and a week ago 75.7. Health offices in Germany reported 13,565 new Corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is according to figures reflecting the status of the RKI dashboard as of 04:09. A week ago, the figure had been 13,531 infections.

According to the new data, 35 deaths were recorded throughout Germany within 24 hours. A week ago, there had been 23 deaths. The RKI counted 4,030,681 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic, but the actual total is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

The incidence of new infections has been the basis for many Corona restrictions in the pandemic so far, such as under the federal emergency brake that expired at the end of June. In the future, other values such as the number of hospital admissions will also be taken into account to a greater extent.

The RKI gave the number of Corona patients admitted to hospitals per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days as 1.69 in its situation report on Tuesday (Monday 1.64). A nationwide threshold for when the situation should be considered critical is not provided for hospitalization incidence, in part because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence is calculated on the basis of the reporting date to the local health authority. Accordingly, an average of about ten days elapses between an infection and hospitalization; this value thus reflects the infection situation with a noticeable delay.

The RKI gave the number of people who recovered as 3,793,000. The number of people who died from or with the involvement of a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 92,448.
