Cyprien Gaillard. Wassermusik

Haus der Kunst

München is one of the main stages for Cyprien Gaillard's latest film Retinal Rivalry, a groundbreaking work that takes us on a journey through time and beneath the surface of the city. Retinal Rivalry continues Gaillard's exploration of stereoscopic films, which he first began in his 2015 film Nightlife, exploring their sculptural and psychedelic potentials.

In reflecting on public monuments and their meanings, we draw inspiration from Gaillard's longstanding search for artifacts and architectures that have lost their original purpose. This raises the question of how the Haus der Kunst building functions as a monument to its difficult history and continually unfolds through new works by living artists. Gaillard's significant film installation will be complemented by a new photo series and site-specific works by the artist.

Based in Berlin and Paris, Gaillard works across various media including photography, film, video, collage, installation, and live performance. He creates an extraordinary cosmos where phenomena such as civilizational upheavals and geological time find new expressions. His work embraces a poetry of entropy, rearranging history to illuminate the present.

The film Retinal Rivalry is a co-production of Haus der Kunst and Fondation Beyeler, where it premiered in summer 2024. By expanding the visual space and utilizing the spatiality of film as an organizational principle for different themes, it transcends narrative and focuses on pure seeing.
