The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of extreme thunderstorms in Berlin and Brandenburg for early Sunday evening. In Brandenburg, the districts of Ostprignitz-Ruppin, Barnim, Dahme-Spreewald, Märkisch-Oderland, Oberhavel, Oder-Spree and Spree-Neiße as well as the city of Cottbus are likely to be affected, the DWD said. The warning is valid until 6:30 p.m., it said.
Isolated trees could be uprooted and roofs damaged, it said. "Pay special attention to falling branches, roof tiles or objects." Flooding of basements and streets, as well as localized flooding along streams and small rivers, were possible, it said.
Heavy rain fell in some parts of Berlin. The northeast of the city was particularly affected. As the DWD announced on Twitter, the amount of precipitation in Berlin-Buch was almost 50 liters per square meter within an hour, in Marzahn 40 liters. In Dahlem, in the south of the city, however, only three liters.
An employee in the situation service of the Berlin police also said in the early evening that numerous operations were underway because of the weather, especially in the northeast. There were various flooded streets here. However, he said he was not aware of any major accidents so far. "According to my information, the capital is still standing," the official said.
The Berlin Fire Department announced on Twitter that it was in a "state of emergency weather." Missions would be prioritized processed, it could come to longer waiting times at the emergency call 112. In its advice on how to behave during storms, it recommended, among other things, staying indoors if possible and unplugging televisions or PCs, as well as fighting minor water damage yourself.
In Frohnau, according to the fire department, a construction group was flooded by an open sewage pipe. An excavator had sagged and the sewage had threatened to run into the neighboring property.A Daily Mirror colleague reports that she is also stuck in the plane Trieste on the tarmac of the BER. The airport had been temporarily closed because of the storm.
