Record Orders in German Industry Driven by Defense Spending

Two explosions rocked Frankfurt on Thursday morning, adding to a series of similar attacks in the region over the past week. The incidents occurred outside a café on Berger Straße and a shisha bar on Zeil, a major shopping street in Germany. Police have arrested a 17-year-old Dutch national in connection with the explosions.
The café, a popular Açai spot known as Café Rio, was severely damaged in the blast. Its door was left hanging from its hinges, and shattered glass was scattered across the street. The café had opened only recently but had quickly attracted a loyal clientele, often seen queuing for its offerings. Meanwhile, the shisha bar 'Truth Lounge,' located near a government office, was also targeted in the coordinated attack.
These incidents are part of a broader pattern of violence in the Rhein-Main area surrounding Frankfurt. Authorities have reported approximately two dozen explosions in the region. The Hessian state criminal office is investigating whether these acts could be related to the emerging phenomenon of 'Violence as a Service,' where mainly young offenders are hired by criminal enterprises to carry out arson and similar attacks.
The recent wave of explosions has prompted increased attention from law enforcement. The series began with attacks on a shisha bar in Offenbach and a kiosk in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district, followed by an explosion outside a residential building in Bockenheim. The incidents have prompted investigators to probe possible connections to organized crime, with the central question being the ownership of the affected businesses and properties.
Police are focusing on the hypothesis that these attacks might be 'punishment actions' related to disputes in international drug trafficking, a claim supported by the complex web of crimes being considered. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted similar concerns during a recent presentation on organized crime trends, describing the model as one where a person plans, another finances, and a third executes the attack.
The coordinated nature of the attacks and the suspect's nationality have raised suspicions among investigators. The phenomenon of cross-border crime, including the involvement of Dutch nationals, is not uncommon in such cases. North Rhine-Westphalia has been confronting similar issues for years, indicating that Frankfurt is not alone in facing these challenges.
The investigation has been taken over by the Frankfurt Police's Organized Crime Division, which has developed an extensive strategy for tracking down and prosecuting those responsible. This involves a comprehensive array of search and monitoring measures designed to address the current crime wave effectively.
While Frankfurt grapples with these security issues, the local community is left dealing with the aftermath of the attacks. Local businesses, particularly those already hit, are faced with decisions on how to enhance their security measures moving forward. The series of explosions has sparked fear among residents and business owners about their safety and the stability of the local commercial environment.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The police are diligently working to piece together the network behind these attacks, aiming to curb the cycle of violence affecting the region. With organized crime under the spotlight, all efforts are directed toward restoring peace and normalcy to Frankfurt's streets.
