Nationwide Telecom Blackout Disrupts Spain's Major Networks

A widespread telecommunications outage brought Spain's major mobile networks to a standstill early Tuesday, affecting millions across the country. The disruption hit all leading providers, including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, and Digimobil, with landline connections bearing the brunt in major urban areas.

According to monitoring service DownDetector, the network failure began around 5 a.m. local time. Users reported an inability to make calls, send or receive messages, or access mobile data. The blackout extended to emergency services as well, rendering the European emergency hotline 112 unreachable in several regions.

This latest telecom failure follows closely on the heels of a massive power outage that impacted large swathes of Spain and Portugal just weeks ago, raising concerns over the resilience of the region's critical infrastructure.

To mitigate the crisis, providers began issuing temporary phone numbers to maintain essential communications. Telefónica, the parent company of Movistar, acknowledged that a recent network upgrade may have triggered the disruption. "We are aware that certain services have been affected by ongoing infrastructure improvements. Our teams are actively working to restore full functionality," a company spokesperson told The Independent.

Authorities are continuing to assess the scope of the impact as technicians race to restore connectivity.
