About 55 minutes by train from Paris's Gare de Lyon, Château de Fontainebleau is running two Marie Antoinette exhibitions simultaneously this season. Marie Antoinette: From Avant-Garde to Avant-Garde is on view through November 2, while Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI at Fontainebleau: Splendor and the Good Life opens October 11 and runs through January 25, 2027. Because both shows are hosted at the same estate, a single day trip from Paris can realistically cover both, plus the château itself, which is far less crowded than Versailles on any given day.
London's Victoria & Albert Museum staged its own major Marie Antoinette Style exhibition, pulling together court dress, jewelry including pieces from the V&A's own collection and decorative arts spanning her lasting influence on fashion and design. That original London run closed in March 2026, but the show is now touring, and its only stop in Asia is the Yokohama Museum of Art, running August 1 through November 23, 2026. For anyone already planning a Japan trip this autumn, it's a rare chance to see V&A-curated Marie Antoinette material without a London visit.
None of this is a coincidence of scheduling. 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, and museums across two continents have used the milestone to revisit both the historical queen and the film's outsized influence on how she's remembered. The Versailles show is the only one built with Coppola's direct involvement, since it's staged inside the actual rooms used in the film but the Fontainebleau and Yokohama exhibitions each bring different material: Fontainebleau focuses on the historical court, while the V&A-organized show leans into fashion history spanning centuries, tying Marie Antoinette to designers like Vivienne Westwood and Erdem who've referenced her image directly.
For visitors basing themselves in Paris, the realistic itinerary is Versailles plus Fontainebleau both reachable by train in under an hour, and different enough in focus (film history at Versailles, court history at Fontainebleau) that visiting both doesn't feel repetitive. Check each estate's official site for current opening hours before you go, since autumn and winter schedules typically run shorter days than summer.
