New transplant centre opens

Tue 25th May, 2010

Munich. A new organ transplantation centre will be the first one to coordinate work across locations. All organs will be transplanted here in the future.

The Bavarian minister for scientific affairs (FDP), Wolfgang Heubisch, stated that three people die every day in Germany, waiting for an organ transplant. At the opening of the new transplantation centre, by the uniclinic Grosshadern, he also said "The statistics have to wake us up." People have to be convinced to carry an organ donor card.

The new centre in Grosshadern is the first one to work across locations, says Heubisch. In the long run the transplantation medicine in all of Bavaria has to be adjusted and coordinated.

The centre is the first of its kind in Germany, says director Bruno Meister. All Organs (kidneys, livers, lungs, pancreas and small intestines) will be transplanted here - for adults and for children. The new institute is the only centre for heart transplantations in the south of Bavaria. Monitoring after a transplantation takes place had occurred at transplant station H5, for 30 years.
The average waiting time for an organ is four to five years.
