Munich zoo babies

Thu 1st Apr, 2010

The youngest and most popular member of Hellabrunn's elephant family - little Jamuna Toni gets - a playmate.

The new Munich Zoo CEO Dr. Andreas Knieriem announced Wednesday that in May next year, the elephant house is again expecting new offspring. Temi - the expectant elephant mother, is in the tenth month and has thus already reached half of her gestation. She arrived at Hellabrunn in 2006 from the Tierpark Berlin-Friedrichsfelde and brought from there experiences in dealing with young elephants.

Panang, Jamuna's mother had unfortunately lost interest in her child only a few days after birth on Christmas. The Miniphant has since been brought up with the bottle, is developing beautifully and is an absolute favorite in Munich zoo. From Easter, they may - if the weather holds - go out several times a day go into the open.  On Wednesday Jamuna made a trip outside for the photographers: played football to the delight of visitors with giant Easter eggs.

In other enclosures, proud mothers will present their babies as well on Easter Sunday. For instance, the small-Banteng calf Kermit, antelope Kato and her kid sister, Kimi, also have lots of little goats, a mini-Kudu and several small Humboldt Penguins.
