Munich holidays: the best things to do and see

Tue 24th Jul, 2018

Munich is a wonderful city to discover the most precious and authentic side of Germany. The top things to do and see are in the city center and this is my ultimate list of the highlights you should definitely keep in mind for your next Munich Holidays!

Renting a car to save money and time!

I encourage you to rent a car to move faster and easier, especially if you want to use this Munich holidays to getting around nearby areas too. Check online as I did and see all the car rental pick-up options in Munich you have to create a valid itinerary and stress-free travel experience! I love how with this website you can actually compare car hire and save money, time and energy!

Strolling at Marienplatz

The main square of Monaco and the heart of the city. On the square are the NeuesRathaus (New Town Hall, in neo-Gothic style) and the AltesRathaus (Old Town Hall), in the middle stands a golden statue of the Madonna. In the Fischbrunnen (fish fountain) in front of the town hall entrance, it is a tradition that ash Wednesday and councilors wash their wallets here, as a good omen for the city's finances.

Marveling at Frauenkirche Munich's symbol

It is the symbol of Munich: the silhouette with the two onion bell towers is unmistakable. It is the largest Gothic basilica in southern Germany. Also, in this case, you can climb the bell tower and admire a splendid panorama.

Shopping at Viktualienmarkt

It is a colorful market in the center of Munich, it is worth visiting because it is beautiful to see. Stalls are usually open from Monday to Saturday from 7.00am to 7.00pm.

Exploring the beautiful Residenz

The Residenz was the home of the Wittelsbach family, a dynasty that continuously ruled over Bavaria from 1180 to 1918. Over time it was transformed from a simple castle into a magnificent royal palace. Not to be missed are the Antiquarium (a large Renaissance-style ceremonial hall), the Cuvilliés theater in rococo style (considered the most beautiful in Europe) and the Schatzkammer (the treasure room).

Visiting AltePinakothek and the museum district

The museum district includes three major art galleries: the AltePinakothek, which collects the collections of the Bavarian nobles and is dedicated to European painting from the 14th to the 18th century; the NeuePinakothek, one of the 19th century art museums most important in the world; and Pinakothek der Moderne, which houses art collections from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Exploring the iconic Deutsches Museum

It is the oldest science and technology museum in the world. Also very interesting is the detached section dedicated to the history of aviation.

Extra: trying some local beer in iconic spots!

Considering that Munich is the "capital of beer" the traditional breweries should also be visited: the Hofbrauhaus (Am Platz 9) is the most famous but in my opinion a bit too touristy and confusing. I suggest you go see it for curiosity, but then go to eat (and drink) in more authentic breweries as Augustinerbräu. You will love it!

When to go? Best time for your Munich holidays

Best time is definitely during Christmas time with all those amazing markets and a lot of folklore could be perfect for a romantic trip but, if you are into a more fun entertaining experience you should definitely go for Oktoberfest, the most incredible event for beer lovers!
