Munich Moves a Step Closer to the Mountains

Mon 1st Feb, 2010

The Federal Ministry of Transport will build a tunnel to remove the traffic bottleneck at the end of the A95 highway before Garmisch-Partenkirchen, for the Olympic Games in 2018, says Muenchener Merkur. A new tunnel should be built through the Auerberg immediately after the end of the highway to eliminate constantly emerging jams on weekends.

According to Ruediger Hanke, a manager for planning and construction of the highway in South Bavaria, it is planned that the A95 by Eschenlohe will no longer will be reduced to two lanes, but will increase to four. After about 300 meters along this way, a double-tube tunnel will be built through the Auerberg mountain.  However, the question of funding is still open. The Auerberg tunnel, the detailed planning of which should be finished by the end of this year, would cost around 100 million euros.
