From Guantanamo to Munich

Wed 31st Mar, 2010

Munich plans to take 17 Uighur detainees from the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo. The State Government has been asked to agree to this.

On the 5th February, the City Council with the votes of all parties represented in the City Hall, voted to accept 17 Uighur detainees from the prison camp in Cuba. They are members of a Muslim minority who fled from China in 2002 and were extradited from Pakistan to the United States.

Ude said the city would participate in this "deeply humanitarian action" and thus help some of the 50 prisoners, against whom no suspicions exist, but because of the danger of persecution and torture they cannot return to their home countries. The City Council could assist with the integration of prisoners especially from Uyghur, as Munich has a community of approximately 500 people from this country.

Meanwhile, more and more politicians in the State Government support the idea of acceptation of innocent detainees from Guantanamo.
